Unsettling The Settlers

Jesus Christ set us free from laws. So why is the church so quick to put us back under them? Certainly, the glad tidings of freedom and salvation get lost in the rigid code of the do’s and don’ts of Christianity.

To continue to eye God in terms of laws and obligations represents a retreat to a pre-Christian level of thought and a rejection of Jesus Christ.

In this classic sermon, Brennan Manning asks, “Are you a pioneer or a settler?” Discover how the institutional church has settled for a system of codes and ethics instead of lives lived through the Spirit of love and compassion.

To the Jews who believed in him Jesus said: If you make my word your home you will indeed be my disciples; you will come to know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

— John 8:31-32 (NJB)

Christ set us free, so that we should remain free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be fastened again to the yoke of slavery.

— Galatians 5:1 (NJB)
